Watts family papers, 1845-1861.

Letters chiefly addressed to Col. Beaufort Taylor Watts (1789-1869) in Laurens District, S.C., written by various relatives in Alabama, Virginia, and South Carolina. Correspondents include George E. Taylor, Virginia Watts, Leonora Watts, and Mary Galt. Also included is an invitation, 11 Apr. 1855, to an event at Limestone Springs Female High School signed by E. Boyce and an undated letter from Ella M. Hill announcing her plans to marry G.W. Shell of Laurens, S.C. Accompanying the letters is an account book, 1845-1857, with journal entries and notations of births and deaths of family members. Letters dating to Civil War era include correspondence from Watt's nephew Eugene O. Williams, a former law student who left his studies to enlist with the 2nd Alabama Regiment stationed in Ft. Morgan near Mobile, Ala., reflects the zeal and enthusiasm of new Confederate recruits at the beginning of the war. He later writes of the monotony experienced at his post, the intense desire to engage in combat, and discusses the possibility of Union forces "turning their Fall & Winter campaign against" Southern forts. Letters of Parolee D. Waters, niece of Watts, reveal her reactions to the news of "the powerful battle fought in Virginia," lamenting the deaths of many soldiers, expressing her concerns that her husband might enlist, admitting that she wished to accompany him should he go against his strong objections, and fearing his death, "when a cruel hand, lays the gallant soldier low, [I] see him writhing, in agony, in a perfect sea of blood, and in a few seconds more, the noble heart is stilled forever!!!"
